You can connect AutoCAD to ChatGPT or Claude today, without code and without changing your drawings. A free connector links AutoCAD on your PC to the AI app you already use, so you can open a drawing and ask questions in plain English.
What you need
- AutoCAD 2022 to 2027 on Windows (full AutoCAD, not AutoCAD LT).
- Claude Desktop, ChatGPT or Cursor on the same PC, with your own account. Your provider’s normal plan and limits apply; the connector adds no AI cost.
- About five minutes.
Three steps
- Download and install the free connector on the PC where AutoCAD runs.
- In AutoCAD, open the Add-ins tab and press the MCP Connector button. It sets up Claude Desktop, ChatGPT and Cursor for you.
- Restart your AI app, open a drawing and ask: “List all layers and how many objects are on each”, “How many times is the block DOOR-90 used?”, “Which external references are missing?”
What the free edition does
It lists layers, counts blocks, finds missing external references and measures distances. It is read-only, so it never draws, changes, saves or deletes anything in your drawing. No time limit, no card. The AI answers from what it reads, and like any AI it can be wrong, so check important answers.
What leaves your PC: the information the AI asks for, such as layer names, counts, coordinates or text, goes to your AI provider under your own account and their data terms.

Want an assistant that also does the work? Meet Lana
Lana AI is your 24/7 personal CAD AI assistant. It reads the drawing you have open in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, ZWCAD, GstarCAD or progeCAD. Tell Lana what to change and approve each change, export quantities into Excel, or check a drawing before you send it. It is free to start and runs next to the CAD you already use on Windows.
Setting this up for a whole office? CADGlobal, an official OpenAI and Anthropic partner for AI in AEC, can install and connect it for your team and train your people. Ask us on the connector page.
